The River - OPEN

Finnick has never had to work for a living in his life.

His family had been poor when he was a child, certainly -- poor for District Four, at least -- but he'd been too young to be expected to do more than help them before and after school when he'd left to go to the Careers. And after that, it had been training while his living expenses were paid for him. And since he won, he'd never had to worry about money. Any fishing he'd done had been because he enjoyed it, and what passed for work had been pandering to the tastes of the Capitol to maintain the image of the glory of victory.

Until he found himself here. Here where nobody except Annie and Johanna will admit to knowing who he is. Here where strangers admire him in passing but then move on, where nobody demands his attention, where he can be a face in the crowd, anonymous in a way he's never been since he was a child. Here where he and Annie need to make money to support themselves. They've graduated from the traps they'd been setting when they first arrived here, having built up enough money and enough trust among the merchants to rent a boat. It's small, so small it could do little more than stick close to shore out in the ocean, but also so small that they can use it where they have been: on the river, closer to Gazin and with less competition than at the port on the coast.

Most mornings, Finnick will be found at the moorings of the little boat, checking nets and readying equipment before he heads out to fish. If anyone happens to walk by along their way along the riverbank, he'll call out a friendly greeting and wave, whether he knows them or not; this might not be Panem, but that makes meeting people and forging new relationships even more important, because he doesn't have anything else to rely on.

The Market - OPEN + Annie

After he's done fishing for the day, Finnick takes his catch into Gazin, to the marketplace. It's turning into a decent money-making effort for him and Annie, and he's starting to know the fishmongers well, to know who will be interested in what sorts of catch, and to try to turn himself into a reliable and steady supplier for them. Once he's done selling his fish, sometimes he goes straight home to Annie. Other times, he pauses to take in the rest of the market.

Today, he has some things in mind. He visits the tailor, because he's desperately in need of both some more comfortable working clothes and something a little more stylish and to his tastes than the very basic clothes he'd bought when he'd first arrived. He has his measurements taken, then he looks through the fabrics on offer, running his arm along them to see how they feel. anyone else who comes in will get an appraising look from Finnick, then a quiet question as he considers two different linens: a brocade and an plainer jacquard.

"What do you like?"

He's trying not to look at the silk, because he knows he can't afford it. In Panem, of course, he'd have gone for the silk without a moment's question.

Once he's decided his order with the tailor, Finnick has one more task he wants to achieve, and it's one that brings him in and out of the market stalls and the shops: he wants a gift for Annie. He starts at a jeweller, fingering elegant silver chains and enamelled brooches, but he finds what he really wants at a woodworker. The box is a good size to put the few pretty things she has to her name here in, and the lid is inlaid with different woods in a floral pattern that reminds him of her garden back in Panem.

He's feeling pleased with himself when he returns home, the box hidden in the bag he takes shopping with him.

Tailor

Xue Yang has his own thoughts for the tailor, now that he's saved up a fair bit through working at Merlan's forge, and figures he has enough for at least one good new outfit to replace the rough set of clothes he'd first bought.

But the question the other man poses - he's sure he's seen the other a few times at least, has him saunter over to peer at the fabric. "What are you having made from them?"

Something perhaps fancy? Or both functional and stunning? Or something that hasn't occurred to him - he's lived among the absurdly wealthy, but also in dirt-ridden poverty.

Ha! Fancy! He can't resist the grin to himself as his guess is confirmed.

"And I'm guessing you either don't like silk," which is kind of silly, "or don't have enough yet, so..." he turns his attention to the selection. Including circling Finnick as well as the various colors.

"Is what you're wearing roughly the style you like?"
