Thanos was dead and everyone had come back but they had lost some of their own in the process as well. Natasha and Tony. He would miss them though he knew they wouldn't want him to grieve him. He'd miss Natasha more than Tony but he was also well aware that he hadn't been the best of a friend to Tony and in fact, he had treated him pretty badly throughout the years though Tony was as much at fault as he was in many ways. He felt bad that he had left a young daughter and Pepper but he didn't doubt for a moment that Tony didn't know exactly what he was doing.

He missed Peggy and he had discussed going back in time and staying with Bucky and what to do with his shield. In the end, it was decided that when Steve went back to return the stone he would stay in the past and move on with Peggy. A part of him felt bad for leaving Sharon, who had tried to have a relationship with but it just wasn't possible.

As the machine activated he expected the same results as last time but when he landed he found himself on a dirt laneway, surrounded by trees. He could see what looked like a town not far ahead. He didn't recognise where he was. Something must have gone wrong with the time machine which raised the question of how he would return to where he was supposed to be. Hopefully it was just a matter of the location being off and not the time, if the time was off then it would be a lot more complicated to fix.

Deciding he might as well find out where he was he headed towards the town.

He's here maybe three days before Steve arrives - just long enough to learn about the place, to acclimate, to wrap his head around where he is. Considering the last five or so years of his life (that he remembers, time spent as ashes discounted) he can't even say this is the strangest situation he's found himself in.

There are a few redeeming qualities. First and foremost, not a single person seems to have any goddamn idea who he is, meaning he's not wanted for anything. Hasn't killed anyone's family members here, no heinous crimes against nature committed so far. Clean slate, which is... Well, it's a big deal for him.

He's built a little bit of a rapport with the people in the marketplace. Just an easy familiarity, they've gotten used to his face over the last three days. Offered to do manual labor for a little money to buy himself food, spent that money right back at some of the same market stalls - that's where Steve will find him, quietly exchanging coin for bread and fruit smack in the center of town.
